What Should I Do If The Engine of A Rotary Drilling Rig Is Difficult To Start

As the "heart" of a rotary drilling rig, the engine's start-up status directly affects the efficiency of engineering operations. In actual construction, low-temperature environments, fuel issues, and component aging can all lead to difficulties in starting the engine. If these problems are not promptly identified and resolved, it is easy to delay the construction period. The following are six practical dimensions to popularize the methods for quickly identifying and solving startup problems.

1. Check if the fuel supply is normal: First, check the fuel level in the fuel tank. If the fuel level is insufficient, add diesel of the right grade in time. If the fuel level is sufficient, check whether there is any blockage or leakage in the fuel line. Air in the line can also cause poor fuel supply. You can manually pump the fuel to remove the air.


2. Check the battery status: If there is an abnormal "tap-tap" sound when starting, it is very likely that the battery is discharged or the terminals are loose. It is necessary to check the battery power and charge it in time when it is low. Tighten the terminal posts with a wrench to remove the surface oxide layer and ensure stable current transmission.


3. Confirm whether the intake system is unobstructed: A clogged air filter can lead to insufficient air intake, affecting engine starting. Remove the air filter for inspection. If there is a lot of dust on the surface, you can blow it with compressed air in the reverse direction. If the filter element is damaged or severely contaminated with oil, a new filter element should be replaced immediately to prevent impurities from entering the cylinder.


4. Check the starting motor and circuit: Motor failure is a common cause of difficult starting. Observe whether the motor is running during starting. If there is no response at all, it may be due to worn carbon brushes of the motor or an open circuit in the circuit. At this point, the power supply should be disconnected. Check whether the motor wiring is intact. If necessary, replace the carbon brushes or repair the motor.


5. Pay attention to the influence of environmental temperature: In low-temperature environments, diesel is prone to solidification and the viscosity of engine oil increases, resulting in greater resistance when starting the engine. Anticoagulants can be added to the fuel tank to lower the freezing point of diesel. Before starting, preheat the engine through a preheating system (such as a flame preheating plug). Wait until the temperature rises before attempting to start.


6. Troubleshoot mechanical faults of the engine: If no issues are found during the above checks, it might be an internal mechanical fault of the engine, such as abnormal valve clearance or insufficient cylinder pressure due to wear of piston rings. Such problems need to be disassembled and inspected by professional maintenance personnel. Do not disassemble them by yourself to avoid aggravating the fault.

Daily maintenance of components such as fuel, battery, and air filter should be done well. When encountering faults, they should be checked in the order of "simple first, then complex".
