Quality Control of Drill Pipes for Rotary Drilling RIGS

The drill pipe of a rotary drilling rig is the core component for transmitting torque and axial force, and its quality directly affects the safety and efficiency of construction. From the selection of raw materials to later maintenance, quality control at every stage is indispensable. The slightest oversight may lead to serious problems such as breakage and deformation.

1. Raw material selection: High-strength low-alloy steel is preferred, and its mechanical properties must be verified through a material test report. Ensure the uniform chemical composition of the steel to avoid insufficient toughness due to excessive impurities.


2. Welding process control: Key welds are welded by fully automatic submerged arc welding, and 100% ultrasonic flaw detection is carried out after welding. Strictly control the interlayer temperature to prevent microcracks caused by welding stress concentration.


3. Heat treatment specifications: The entire drill pipe shall undergo quenching and tempering treatment to ensure that the hardness of each section is uniformly between 28 and 32HRC. Internal stress is eliminated through low-temperature tempering to enhance fatigue resistance.


4. Dimensional accuracy inspection: Use a laser diameter gauge to check the straightness. The deviation must not exceed 0.5mm/m. Check the go and no-go gauges at the threaded connection parts to ensure that the fit clearance meets the standards.


5. Factory hydrostatic test: Conduct a hydrostatic test at 1.5 times the rated working pressure and maintain the pressure for 30 minutes without leakage. At the same time, monitor the deformation of the column body, which must not exceed 0.2% of the diameter.


6. Usage and maintenance requirements: After each operation, clean the outer wall of the drill pipe and check the wear of the threads. Do not use beyond the torque limit. If local deformation is found, stop using it immediately for maintenance.
